Scouting at the Observatory
Cub Scouts
The CAA offers a basic Cub Scout program for the whole pack or just individual dens. The night begins with an approximately 45 minute presentation, which covers all the material from the old Cub Scout Astronomy belt loop. The belt loop is no longer available, however it was an excellent set of material to cover for Astronomy purposes. Following the presentation, if skies are clear, there will be observing opportunities on numerous of the club telescopes. If the skies are not clear, then a tour of the facility is provided with discussion about all the telescopes at the facility. Per Linn County regulations a 2$ per head charge is required for arraigned events at the observatory (charge applies to scouts, adults, and siblings over 5 years of age). Please contact us to arrange an event: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Boy Scouts
The CAA has 3 members who are certified Astronomy merit badge counselors. The group has developed a workbook that covers all of the merit badge requirements and organizes the work so that any certified merit badge counselor can verifiy the work needed to complete the requirements. We can support individual efforts as well as entire troops. Please be aware that all the merit badge requirements cannot be completed in one day/evening, which is why the workbook was developed to help record all the requirement work for review by the counselors. Per Linn County regulations a 2$ per head charge is required for arraigned events at the observatory (charge includes scouts, adults and siblings over 5 years of age). Please contact us to discuss merit badge support options: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Girl Scouts
Girl Scout events at the observatory are prearranged through the local Girl Scout organization, for selected dates throughout the year. Please contact your local council organizers about events at the observatory. On occasion we have supported events for Girl Scout troops in much the same fashion as we do for Cub Scouts described above. If you have any problems getting events arraigned through the Girl Scouts, feel free to contact us: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
